This Wild Severance Theory Turns the Whole Gemma Mystery Upside Down

What if Gemma is not who we think she is?
As we thought until the end of the first season, Mark's wife, Gemma, died in a car accident. But as it turns out, Gemma is Ms. Casey, a psychologist who works on the severed floor and never leaves the office.
There are several opinions about what actually happened to Gemma. There is a theory that Ms. Casey became a prototype for AI. Lumon may have replaced her dead mind with an artificial one. This would explain Ms. Casey's slightly mechanical voice and strange robotic behavior.
Another suggestion is much more intriguing: Ms. Casey may be being used to test a new immortality technology that revives the dead and awakens their consciousness and memory.
All of these theories suggest that Gemma's body was taken by Lumon after the accident in order to use her in their experiments. But is the power of the corporation so great that they can just take someone's dead body?
What if Gemma herself gave her consent to stay with Lumon?
The Car Accident Was Gemma's Fault
Reddit user Electric_Lion_7077 suggests that Gemma is not Lumon's hostage, but rather agreed to be severed voluntarily. According to this theory, the car accident that Mark thought killed his wife was Gemma's fault.
One of the confirmations of this theory are the documents that Mr. Drummond found in Irving's house when he was having dinner with Burt and Fields.
On one of the papers we could see that Irv was speculating about whether one of the workers had agreed to get severed because of a car accident.
Gemma May Have Agreed to Get Severed Out of a Terrible Sense of Guilt
In the sixth episode, Attila, Burt talks about how he won't go to heaven because he did something terrible. However, Lumon's management convinced him that his innie also had a soul – meaning that at least part of him wouldn't go to hell.
Most of Lumon's severed workers are either people who have done something they regret or who have suffered a tragic loss – both want to forget their burdens, at least for a while.
We still don't know the details of the accident or if there were other victims – Gemma could have felt a huge sense of guilt about what happened and Lumon could have contacted her right after. Later, everything was arranged to make Mark believe that Gemma was dead.
This Plot Twist Would Make Mark's Situation Even Worse
Such a twist would completely turn Mark's tragedy on its head, which in a way would be even worse – his wife did not die but willingly condemned him to terrible suffering.
Some fans are even suggesting that the Season 2 finale will be Mark finding Gemma's consent tape, which would be an even bigger twist than the fact that Mark's wife turned out to be alive.
