Top 12 Unexpected Cameos in ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’

Can you even fathom your favorite musician or athlete in the SpongeBob universe? Well, chances are they're already in the show! Nickelodeon has had many unexpected guests that you might have missed.
SpongeBob has been around for a really long time and it doesn't plan on going anywhere anytime soon (or ever, to be honest).
And you'll be surprised by how many unexpected cameos there have been over the years. It’s an honestly smart move on Nickelodeon's part to build such an impressive track record appealing to a very diverse audience. These are 12 most unexpected of all unexpected SpongeBob SquarePants appearances.
1. Johnny Depp
Appearance: “SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One” (Season 6, Episode 11)
Role: Jack Kahuna Laguna
Jack Sparrow? More like Jack Kahuna Laguna! In this episode, Depp transformed into a muscular surf guru with blonde hair, sporting purple shorts and a dolphin necklace.
If there's one actor born to play Jack Kahuna Laguna, it's Johnny Depp. He somehow managed to make this already cool character even cooler.
Memorable moment: “Little dude, I was born to do this winks,” Jack Kahuna Laguna to SpongeBob.
2. Keanu Reeves
Appearance: The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run
Role: Sage
The Matrix star took on a different kind of role this time: a wise tumbleweed named Sage. Yep, that's right. Keanu Reeves played a tumbleweed and it worked perfectly too. The movie follows SpongeBob and Patrick on their quest to save Gary.
Reeves brought his signature zen-like presence to this role, making Sage probably the chillest tumbleweed you'll ever meet in your life.
Memorable moment: “I'm made out of sage and I am a sage. So it works out pretty well,” Sage explained his name to SpongeBob and Patrick.
3. Snoop Dogg
Appearance: The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run
Role: The Gambler
Keanu Reeves wasn't the only surprising guest star in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. Snoop Dogg made a cameo as a gambler in the Wild West-themed scene. And while it was kind of random, this was actually very fun.
Memorable moment: Snoop Dogg's rap that made SpongeBob and Patrick dance.
4. LeBron James
Appearance: “Truth or Square” (Season 6, Episode 23)
Role: himself
NBA superstar LeBron James made a surprise appearance in this special episode celebrating SpongeBob's 10th anniversary.
Memorable moment: LeBron James explaining to Patchy the Pirate why he can't be here (he had a game that day).
5-7. RuPaul, JoJo Siwa & Heidi Klum
Appearance: “SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout” (Season 12, Episode 13)
Role: themselves
“SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout” marked a big celebration with a bunch of guest stars, including these three celebrities.
Honorable mention: RuPaul, in full drag, appeared to be standing on the set of RuPaul's Drag Race.
8. Victoria Beckham
Appearance: “The Clash of Triton” (Season 6, Episode 26)
Role: Queen Amphitrite
Victoria Beckham showing off her royal attitude was pretty much perfect casting.
The former Spice Girl voiced King Neptune's wife in this special episode. And while you might think it's just another random celebrity appearance, Victoria Beckham actually killed it as the queen of the sea.
Memorable moment: “Oh husband, I'm so glad to see you enjoying your birthday party,” in her iconic accent.
9. David Bowie
Appearance: "Atlantis SquarePantis" (Season 5, Episode 12)
Role: Lord Royal Highness
This one is seriously mind-blowing! The legendary David Bowie voiced the ruler of Atlantis, and it was absolutely perfect. His character was this sophisticated, artsy leader who's totally obsessed with art (seriously, who better than Bowie?). The whole episode was basically one big adventure, and Bowie's voice made it extra special.
Memorable moment: “Art is what happens when you learn to dream,” Lord Royal Highness to SpongeBob, Squidward and Patrick.
10. Avril Lavigne
Appearance: The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie; Square Roots: The Story of SpongeBob SquarePants
Role: Theme Song Singer
The pop-punk princess gave the classic SpongeBob theme song a totally rockin' makeover for the movie's soundtrack. She turned that happy tune into something you could actually bop along to!
11. Serena Williams
Appearance: “Plankton's Plan” (Short, 2004)
Role: herself
Tennis legend Serena Williams made a hilarious cameo in this super short clip. She accidentally drinks a glass of water with Plankton in it (yuck!) and ends up watering a plant with it. Poor Plankton!
Serena's confused face when she hears Plankton's tiny screams after dumping him in a plant pot is pure gold.
Fun fact: This fun little short actually aired during the 2004 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.
12. Aubrey Plaza
Appearance: “Mall Girl Pearl” (Season 9, Episode 19)
Role: Nocturna
Parks and Recreation star Aubrey Plaza voiced the super cool goth fish who’s working at the mall (and hating it most of the time). Nocturna is basically the underwater version of Plaza herself.
Memorable moment: When Nocturna says “Awesome” after the customer falls over.
