Voight’s Shocking Plot Twist in ‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 12 Finale Fixes the Show’s Biggest Problem

A shocking revelation about Voight’s scheming against Charlie Reid became one of the most controversial plot twists in Chicago P.D.'s season 12 finale. This, however, has just helped the show get rid of one of its biggest problems.
The last episode of Chicago P.D.’s season 12 has been a pretty messy action-packed experience for fans which, luckily, resulted in a major issue’s resolution.
Picking up the story right where episode 21 left it, episode 22 titled “Vows” follows Voight through his determination to bring down the season’s new Deputy Chief Charlie Reid portrayed by The Pitt’s star Shawn Hatosy.
Despite not denying his own involvement in what eventually happens to Reid, Voight still comes off clear as his actions that do seem to have worked in the best way for Chicago’s streets. Here’s what the show’s cast and crew has to say about the latest major turning point.
Shawn Hatosy Wanted ‘Chicago P.D.’ Audiences to Sympathise With Reid No Matter What
In the show’s season 12, Hatosy’s Charlie Reid is introduced as a dedicated law enforcement police officer who wants nothing but the best for the city. However, his nature soon proves to be way more complex and ambiguous while his intentions are far from being centred on justice.
“For me, he's doing what he has to do and he makes sense, what he's saying. He's not wrong, and his intention is to take out the worst of the worst... I don't think they wake up in the morning and look in the mirror and say, 'I'm the worst.' I think they actually believe they're doing good. [...] I've played some pretty awful people, and I think that a successful character to me is even if he is bad, even if we have seen him do unimaginably bad things — if an audience even after that can say, 'But I sort of sympathize with that character,' to me that's a successful character”, the actor revealed in an interview with NBC.
‘Chicago P.D.’ Showrunner Hopes to Explore Voight’s “Emotional Fallout” in Season 13
Even though it wasn’t Voight who eventually shot Reid, the former’s involvement in the latter’s murder is confirmed in the same episode. It comes as a pretty challenging thing to handle for Voight, known for his grounded moral principles regarding his job as a police officer.
With Chicago’s streets now being way safer than with Reid running around, the character might be about to face a major crisis after what he did, which will also likely become the centre of the upcoming season 13’s attention.
“I believe this one’s gonna have a big impact on Voight — he was evolving, changing over the last few seasons, and we set out this year to test that evolution; just how much had he changed? Were his instincts still there? What was he willing to give up to satisfy those instincts if all else failed? In the finale, we saw him succumb. I’m hoping next season we can find a fresh way to explore the emotional fallout and the cost for him”, Chicago P.D.’s showrunner Gwen Sigan said in a statement to Deadline.
When Is ‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 13 Premiering?
The show’s next instalment will arrive on NBC this October, though the network is yet to announce the exact premiere date.
