This animated family is far from normal. But they have a lot to teach us about parenting and being great kids.

As a huge fan of animated series, I don't mind tuning in to shows that none of my friends are aware of. Usually, the shows I choose turn out to be hidden gems and I never end up disappointed after binging them all. With each new series I watch, my love for cartoons proves to be a strong one.

It’s also what happened with The Great North. While I can’t say that the match was immediate, it took me 2-3 episodes to absolutely fall in love with it. This animated sitcom premiered on Fox in 2021 and is now on its season 5, but I only found it this year. The Great North is created by the Molyneux sisters and Minty Lewis along with Loren Bouchard, one of Bob’s Burgers' creators.

What Is The Great North About?

The sitcom focuses on a particular Tobin family living in a small town in Alaska, hence the name of the show. At the center of the story is a single father, Beef Tobin, brilliantly voiced by Nick Offerman (one of the reasons I loved the show).

In the first episode, he finds out that his wife is not dead, as his four children told him to spare his feelings, but has run off with a lover. And while it's hard for him to adjust to this harsh reality, he manages to do it pretty well, all with the help of his children: Wolf, Ham, Judy, and Moon.

The best thing about the family is how close they are, rooting for each other and always ready to support and help each other through whatever the hell they are going through. In fact, they seem to have no boundaries, that's how close they are, and while it may sound creepy or unhealthy, it's the unconditional love they all share that makes me say that this TV family can serve as an example for many of us.

Beef's parenting methods are not always considered normal, but even so, he manages to raise his kids in a way that they actually love hanging out with him, they don't mind their multiple chores, and they rely on each other and always know there is no judgment.

Is The Great North Connected to Bob’s Burgers?

Many people, after finding out that the show's creators are connected to Bob's Burgers, started comparing the two shows, but that's not the way to go.

“The Great North is a lot different from Bob’s Burgers. While Bob’s is purely an animated family comedy, The Great North is more of a slice of life series. It has a lot more heart and deeper moments that would be overlooked in Bob’s. It deals with topics like divorce, coming out to your family and friends, etc,” Redditor mcdonaldsmcdonalds said.

The Great North is available to stream on Hulu.
