Other Mommy won its opening weekend and then got one of the worst audience grades in two years. Netflix subscribers will still be waiting on it next summer.

Universal opened Other Mommy in U.S. theaters on October 9, 2026, and it went straight to No. 1. If you're waiting for Netflix, the honest answer is around June 2027. Universal's streaming deals send the film to Peacock first and to Netflix second, and neither date has been announced, so the math below works from the deal terms.

The film comes from the Blumhouse–Atomic Monster banner, with James Wan producing and Rob Savage (The Boogeyman) directing. Nathan Elston adapted Josh Malerman's 2024 novel Incidents Around the House, and Chastain plays two roles: Ursula, a young girl's mother, and the entity that wears her face, per Wikipedia.

Stop one: theaters and digital rental

Theaters are where Other Mommy lives right now, and the first month went in two directions at once:

  • The opening: $27.5 million from 3,365 theaters over October 9–11, and $45.2 million worldwide, per the AP. The budget was around $19 million.
  • The grade: Opening-night audiences gave it a D+ CinemaScore, the lowest grade since Megalopolis in September 2024, according to 25YL. Critics were harder still: 19% on Rotten Tomatoes, against 46% from audiences.
  • The drop: The second weekend brought in $8.3 million, down about 70%. The running total stood at $44.8 million domestic and roughly $78.7 million worldwide, per Comic Basics.

On a $19 million budget, those numbers work whatever the grade says. Universal's head of domestic distribution saw it the same way on opening weekend.

"No matter how you look at it, everybody turned out for it."

— Jim Orr, Universal, to the AP

Savage promised scares well before release. Asked how many jump scares the film has, he told Dread Central, "Oh, like 50." Critic Richard Lawson was less impressed and called the result "an attractive but mostly vacuous collection of jumpy bits and half-baked mythology."

Universal hasn't announced a digital rental date yet. That's the next thing to watch for, since it will be the first way to see Other Mommy at home.

Stop two: Peacock

Universal's live-action films stream exclusively on Peacock for four months before anyone else gets them, per What's on Netflix. After that, Netflix gets a 10-month window, and then the film goes back to Peacock for a final four months.

Don't miss: A horror movie a week before Halloween sounded smart. Clayface's second weekend may prove otherwise

The cleanest example on the calendar is Reminders of Him, the Colleen Hoover adaptation:

  • In theaters: March 13, 2026
  • On Peacock: July 10, 2026, 119 days later
  • On Netflix: November 10, 2026, exactly four months after that

Run Other Mommy through the same schedule, and Peacock lands in early February 2027. Men's Journal arrived at a similar estimate, via Yahoo.

Netflix doesn't get Universal's horror when it's hot. It gets the film eight months after opening weekend, after Peacock has had the first pass.

Netflix: around June 2027

Four months after Peacock puts Netflix in early June 2027. Under the deal, the film would then stay on Netflix for about 10 months before heading back to Peacock in spring 2028. That timeline covers Netflix in the U.S. only, and none of these streaming dates is official until Universal or Netflix announces them.

The D+ shouldn't change the calendar, because the windows are set by contract, not by reviews. The schedule just means Netflix subscribers will meet Other Mommy only after theatergoers, renters and Peacock subscribers have finished arguing about it.
